Die vyfde aflewering van die tweejaarlikse Afrikaansgrammatikawerkwinkel (AGW) word vanjaar deur die University of Michigan, VSA, aangebied. Dit volg op hoogs suksesvolle vorige werkwinkels in Suid-Afrika (2016, 2023), België (2018) en Nederland (2021). Soos etlike van die vorige werkwinkels, sal AGW5 ook ’n hibriede geleentheid wees: Werkwinkeldeelnemers sal aanlyn of persoonlik by die University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, VSA, hul referate kan lewer.

Die werkwinkel het ten doel om navorsers wat Afrikaanse taalkunde vanuit verskillende teoretiese en metodologiese perspektiewe bestudeer, bymekaar te bring. Ons verwelkom bydraes oor enige aspek van die Afrikaanse taalkunde, insluitend leksikografie, ortografie, fonologie, fonetiek, morfologie, sintaksis, semantiek en pragmatiek. Referate wat die Afrikaanse grammatika met ander Wes-Germaanse of onverwante tale se grammatikas vergelyk, word ook verwelkom, asook referate oor die diachroniese ontwikkeling van Afrikaanse grammatika, die rol van taalkontak op die grammatika en hedendaagse grammatikale variasie.

Ons is ook bevoorreg om ons twee hoofsprekers aan te kondig:

Taal van aanbieding: Soos in die verlede word alle aanbiedings in Engels gelewer.

Lengte van voordragte: Alles voordragte sal 20 minute lank wees, met ’n addisionele 10 minute vir vrae en antwoorde.

Ewekniebeoordeelde konferensiepublikasie: Deelnemers het die opsie om óf slegs ’n referaat te lewer, óf om ook hul referaat te verwerk na ’n volle lengte artikel vir die digitale konferensiepublikasie. Elke artikel wat vir die konferensiepublikasie voorgelê word, sal deur twee anonieme beoordelaars beoordeel word en ook ’n ISBN-nommer kry. Dit sal mettertyd op die AGW-webblad beskikbaar gestel word.

Studente en junior navorsers: Ons nooi veral studente en junior navorsers uit om voorstelle in te dien, ingeslote voorstelle van werk wat nog onderweg is, of wat gebaseer is op ’n navorsingsvoorstel. AGW bied ’n uitstekende geleentheid vir studente en junior navorsers om terugvoer te ontvang op hulle navorsingsplanne.

Opsommings

• Die teks van die opsommings moet op een bladsy pas (òf A4 of “letter” grootte). ’n Tweede bladsy kan gebruik word vir data, figure en verwysings.
• Gebruik 12 punt-lettergrootte en enkelspasiëring..
• Dien asseblief die opsomming in Microsoft Word- (of ander versoenbare) formaat in, met minimale formatering (d.w.s. vermy die gebruik van jou eie styl).
• Alle opsommings moet aanlyn via EasyChair ingedien word voor 23:59 (SAST) op 31 Maart 2025: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=agw5
• Outeurs wat meer as een opsomming wil indien, moet asb. ʼn aparte aanlyn indieningsvorm vir elke opsomming voltooi.
• Alle opsommings gaan deur ʼn ewekniebeoordelingsproses, en die finale besluit sal deur die organiseringskomitee geneem word. Vollengte artikels

• Slegs outeurs wat aangedui het dat hulle ʼn vollengte artikel wil indien, en wie se opsomming aanvaar is, sal vereis word om ʼn vollengte artikel vir die publikasie in te dien.

The fifth installment of the biannual Afrikaans Grammar Workshop (AGW) will be hosted this year by the University of Michigan, USA. This follows on from the highly successful workshops previously held in South Africa (2016, 2023), Belgium (2018) and the Netherlands (2021).

Like several of the previous workshops, AGW5 will be a hybrid event, with participation available both online and in person at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. The workshop aims to bring together researchers from different theoretical and methodological perspectives who study Afrikaans linguistics. We welcome contributions on any aspect of Afrikaans linguistics, including lexicography, orthography, phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Papers that compare Afrikaans grammar with other West Germanic or unrelated languages’ grammar are also welcomed, as are papers on the diachronic development of Afrikaans grammar, the role of language contact on the grammar, and current grammatical variation.

We are honoured to also announce our two keynote speakers:

Language of presentations: As at previous workshops, the language of presentation at AGW5 will be English.

Length of presentations: All presentations will be 20 minutes long, with an additional 10 minutes for Q&A.

Peer-reviewed conference proceedings: Participants will have the choice to either only present a paper at the workshop, or to also develop their presentation into a short paper for publication in the conference proceedings. Each paper submitted for publication will be reviewed by two anonymous peer reviewers, and will also receive an ISBN number. Proceedings will be published in electronic format on the AGW website.

Student and early-career researchers: Student and early-career researchers: In particular, we invite students and early-career researchers to submit abstracts, including abstracts based on work in progress or on a research proposal. AGW provides an ideal venue for students and early-career researchers to receive feedback on their research plans.

Abstracts

• The text of the abstract should fit on a single page (either A4 or letter size). A second page can be used for examples, figures, and references.
• Use 12 point font size and single spacing.
• Please submit the abstract in Microsoft Word (or other compatible) format, with minimal formatting (i.e., avoid using your own styles).
• All abstracts must be submitted online via EasyChair before 23:59 (SAST) on March 31, 2025. Use the following link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=agw5
• Authors who wish to submit more than one abstract, should fill out a separate online submission form for each abstract.
• All abstracts will be peer reviewed, and the final decision will be made by the organizing committee. Since peer review will be done anonymously, please avoid all references to your own name or other personal information.

Full papers

• Only those authors who indicated that they intend to submit a full paper for publication in the conference proceedings, and whose abstracts have been accepted, will be required to submit a full length paper.
• The paper should be between 4,000 and 6,000 words, including examples and references.
• Further instructions, including a Microsoft Word template, will be provided to authors whose abstracts have been accepted for publication.
