On the 5th and 6th of December 2011, the Center for Mexican Studies of the University of Antwerp organizes a conference on the impact of the typography and painting of the Southern Netherlands in Mexico in the 16th and 17th century.

In this period, printing and painting in the Southern Netherlands were at an unprecedented height. Numerous printing houses and painting workshops brought their work to such perfection, that they belonged to the most famous and renowned of their times. As the Southern Netherlands belonged to the Spanish Habsburg Empire, the local typographic and artistic production was also diffused in Spain and consequently in the New World.

What typographic and pictographic work was exported to Spain and from there on to New Spain? Which styles and genres were mostly asked for? How did the Mexican workshops adopt the strategies of representation and the most popular themes from the Flemish works?

Speakers include Werner Thomas (KULeuven), Enrique González González (IIUE-UNAM), Stijn Van Rossem (University of Antwerp), César Manrique Figueroa (KULeuven), Marina Garone Gravier (UNAM) and Serge Gruzinski (EHESS). The working languages will be English and Spanish.
